As there are no strict laws concerning the management of pests when farming hemp for cannabinoids, the presence of pesticides in CBD is surprisingly common. Provident Labs uses modern LC-MS-MS (liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry) and GC-MS (gas chromatography-mass spectrometry) to accurately quantify 310 pesticides.

As with any industrially grown crop, pesticides are used in the cultivation of cannabis. Two of the most common pesticides used on cannabis plants are bifenazate and myclobutanil. Studies show that cannabis and CBD products sampled across the UK and Europe carry unsafe levels of pesticides, mould, fungi and bacteria. As new regulations are rolled out, pesticide screening products for contamination is becoming common practice.
